Description:
A vast body of Sanskrit poetic and shastric literature is composed in classical metres, and their proper reading, recitation, and appreciation depend on understanding the gati of each chandas. This course introduces the gati-jnana of more than 100 classical Sanskrit metres through their lakshanas and carefully chosen poetic examples, enabling joyful reading and effortless poetic composition. Moving beyond traditional syllable-based classifications, the course adopts a practice-oriented approach by organizing metres according to their gatis and studying vrittas with shared rhythmic affinities together. Guided reading, critical appreciation, and hands-on composition exercises with stage-wise feedback help learners internalize gatis effectively and build a strong foundation for poetic composition and advanced pursuits such as Avadhana. This exploration of Sanskrit chandas is guided by Prof. Ramakrishna Pejathaya, whose deep scholarship and methodical teaching bring clarity and joy to the study of metrical rhythm.
